Training course

At Positive Behaviour Specialists Ltd, we deliver values-led, evidence-based training that helps families, schools, and care organisations teach safe, effective replacement skills, coping strategies, and daily routines that improve quality of life. Our approach follows UK PBS principles (person-centred, human-rights focused, non-restrictive) and emphasises teaching and enabling over control.

We equip families with practical, easy-to-use tools to understand behaviour, reduce risks, and increase meaningful engagement every day. You’ll learn how to:

  • Use PBS as a values-led, multi-component framework that starts with understanding the person and context, and aims to improve quality of life for everyone involved.

  • Carry out everyday PBS (prevention, teaching, and proactive support) aligned with NICE guidance on least-restrictive, person-centred intervention.

  • Teach coping skills and safer replacement behaviours that meet the same function as the original behaviour, so change is durable and dignified.

Training can be delivered face-to-face, via Zoom, or through e-learning, with options to fit busy family schedules. (We’ll tailor language, visuals, and activities to match your child’s profile and your home routines.)

PBS Training

Our PBS classes take you deeper into the science and practice of behaviour change. Your teams will learn:

  • What PBS is as a science (values, theory/evidence, process), and how it differs from “behaviour management” by prioritising quality of life and skill-building.

  • How to conduct or audit Functional Behaviour Assessments (FBA) using structured, ethical practices (indirect & direct assessment, hypothesis testing, data-led decisions) to inform function-based plans.

  • Active Support and how to embed person-centred enabling (graded assistance, “every moment has potential”) across people and settings so daily living becomes teaching.

  • Creating, implementing, and monitoring PBS/Active Support plans that include both proactive teaching and reactive safety strategies, aligned with UK PBS competencies and NICE guidance.

  • Leading PBS effectively with practice leadership, coaching, fidelity checks, and data review cycles that sustain change over time.

We align with UK standards (BILD/Restraint Reduction Network) so your training supports human rights, reduces reliance on restrictive practices, and promotes preventative cultures

Understand Positive Behaviour Support

We’ll schedule training at convenient times—including twilight, evenings, and weekends—so your teams can participate without disrupting provision. Delivery can be in-person, online (Zoom/Teams), or blended e-learning + live coaching. (We can also run short masterclasses, implementation clinics, and leadership briefings.)

Flexible Training Options

We train senior and junior teaching staff and SLTs to implement PBIS as an evidence-based, tiered framework that improves behavioural, social-emotional, and academic outcomes when implemented with fidelity.

  • Tier System (MTSS): staff learn to design and deliver Tier 1 universal routines and expectations; Tier 2 targeted group supports; and Tier 3 intensive, individualised plans—using teams, data, and coaching.

  • Restorative PBIS: we integrate PBIS and restorative practices so schools move beyond “either/or.” PBIS lays the predictable, positive foundation; restorative practices build relationships, repair harm, and strengthen belonging.

  • We blend PBIS, RP, and MTSS into a simple roadmap reduces exclusions and boosts school culture; Restorative training and resources (e.g., restorative questions, discipline flowchart, “one referral form”) help staff respond consistently and restoratively.

  • PBIS is linked to improved climate and reductions in exclusionary discipline; teams use data (e.g., TFI fidelity tool) to monitor and improve practice.
